How to Reset the StabiliTrak Light

There are three methods in circulation, roughly in order of how often they’re recommended by GM dealers. None of these fix an underlying mechanical problem — they only clear the light after the actual issue is resolved. Resetting the light on top of an unresolved fault just means it comes back.

Method 1: Steering Wheel Cycle

  1. Put the vehicle in park and shut off the engine.
  2. Turn the steering wheel all the way to the left, then all the way to the right, twice.
  3. Wait about 15 seconds, then restart the vehicle.

  3. Turn the vehicle off and back on to re-engage both systems.

Button behavior varies by model year — confirm the exact press-and-hold duration against your owner’s manual before relying on this method.

Method 3: Battery Disconnect (Full Power-Down)

  1. Disconnect the negative battery terminal.
  2. Wait at least five minutes — some sources specify a minimum 60-second full power-down for the EBCM specifically to reset, so err toward the longer wait.
  3. Reconnect the battery and start the engine.
  4. Drive above roughly 15 km/h (about 10 mph) to let the EBCM run its self-test cycle and clear the light if no fault is detected.

  • Light appeared after a wheel alignment, steering work, or tire change → start with Method 1 (steering wheel cycle)
  • Light appeared with no recent service and no other symptoms → try Method 2 (button hold), then Method 1 if it returns
